I wrote 'Best' over the past 4 years, honestly for the sake of actually finishing songs. By the time I had finished it, a lot of the feelings had passed -- lonely & intense breakup feelings. I wasn't 100% sure it would go on this album, even, because I thought it would have fit better on my last album 'Sweet' (I was going THROUGH some shit, lol). I had sent the album to my friend Ben Worcester to see if he wanted to contribute anything, and this is the song that stuck out to him. What he added to this track makes it one of my all time favourites. It was a total blessing. Even if I had decided to move forward with production and include it on 'Bruises', I had NO direction or ideas with where to take this track. Ben did! Not only did I get to create something really really cool with an artist I've looked up to my whole artistic career, but the song got it's wings. The subject of the song (my ex Andrew) also plays a brief cameo in the bridge (lapsteel). I was very precious with 'Bruises' while I was producing, and I only sent him a 40 second clip of the acoustic guitar. Thankfully everything fit together in the end - my harmonies, Jill's strings part, Ben's overdubs and the lapsteel. Just such a lovely song where these dear friends came together for a sonic moment.
